A bird-lovers paradise: Mida Creek
Reserve is less than 5km from Ocean Sports Resort. With extensive mangrove forests, warm
shallow waters and mud-flats at low tide, the creek is home to
many local birds such as the Greater Flamingo, Yellow-Billed
Stalk, Great White Egret and Malachite Kingfisher. The Osprey
and African Fish Eagle are also often sighted. In winter, the
creek plays host to some seasonal migrants: the Crab Plover,
Curlew Sandpiper, Whimbrel and Sanderling.

Gede Ruins is a 12th Century Swahili village that was
mysteriously abandoned some 600 years ago under unknown
circumstances. The ruins are now a National Museum and are
beautifully overgrown in parts by indigenous forest trees,
Baobabs and Tamarind. This site is a wonderful fragment of local
history and well worth a visit. Look out for the Sykes Monkeys
and Golden-Rumped Elephant Shrew that can also be found here.
Guided
tours to Gede Ruins can be arranged for you at Reception. |
