Most of you don’t need to be told this, but for those of you who have never experienced Watamu in December it’s time you tried it. The beach is at its best, the sun shines, the ocean is stunning and crystal clear and there is so much to keep you entertained! Apart from all the usual activities you might expect from a beach holiday, we at Ocean Sports put on a whole load of fun events.
We host The Watamu Sea Fishing Club’s annual Competition which attracts anglers from all over. It’s a two day event and always exciting to be a part of, especially if you bid on the winning boat during the auction the night before on the 27th Dec.
Didn’t manage to get all your Christmas shopping sorted? Don’t panic, we have our annual Craft Fair on Sunday the 20th with over 30 exhibitors selling a wide range of clothing, crafts, jewellery, glassware… and so the list goes on!
Not forgetting the littlies, join us for our Kids Christmas Party on Saturday the 19th; Santa always manages to pay us a visit, whether it’s by tuk-tuk, camel, boat or even parachute! You and your children can also help us beat our neighbours at a very competitive game of beach cricket, The Watamu Ashes on the 27th; or enter into our Kids Deep Sea Fishing Competition on Boxing Day.
On the 28th we put on a Fashion Show which is always fun to watch. We get creative Kenyan designers from all over the country and luckily we have loads of beautiful friends who model it all for us on the night! Watch out, we might rope you in…
We love a good party and there is no shortage of these leading up to NYE. We’ve got our favourite international DJ Roman joining us once again from France. He’s recently been playing to massive crowds in Rio de Janeiro but luckily he fell in love with Kenya after his first visit and jumped at the opportunity to return. He’ll be keeping you all on the dance floor with help from some great local talents, watch this space! If you missed him the last two times he was with us then you can have a listen to his music here.
New Year’s Eve is simply unmissable this year! We’ll be serving a mouthwatering dinner on our stunning deck overlooking the beach and with the option of pre-ordering drinks for your cooler box you can’t go wrong. Dance in the sand under the stars and watch the sun rise over the Indian Ocean. It’s traditional to go for a swim in the sea at dawn and the party doesn’t stop then! In fact our biggest and best party is on the 1st. We like to welcome in the New Year in style and so throughout the day there will be great food, cocktails and most importantly, brilliant music to keep you dancing into the night.
This year we would like to help out two local organisations which do a huge amount of work protecting our wildlife. Bio-Ken is a reptile research centre that is more famous for their work with snakes and snake-bite. They need to rebuild their laboratory and with your help we can make this happen. Local Ocean Trust work hard protecting our turtles and marine environment through community development, practical conservation, education, research and campaigning. We will therefore be giving 5% of all ticket sales to each of these two organisations to help them continue the great work they are doing here in this very special place.
